HAZOP and SIL (LOPA) Study for ADNOC (Abu Dhabi)

Hazard and Operability Study-HAIL and GHASHA Development Project

 The Hail & Ghasha Development (HGD) Project will develop the untapped oil and gas reserves from the highly sour Hail and Ghasha fields. Production is targeted to start by Q4 2027 with sustainable production of 1 BSCFD of Raw Gas, and max production of 82.5 MSBPD of Oil, 76.3 MSBPD of Condensate, 9000 TPD of Sulphur and 5030 TPD of NGL. In addition, Project will capture 1.52 million tonnes of CO2 per year taking ADNOC’s committed investment for carbon capture capacity. 

The Hail and Ghasha fields are situated offshore ABU DHABI about 140 km away from ABU DHABI mainland in water depths varying from 0 to 15 meters. The HAZOP study is vital for hazard identification and risk mitigation at the EPC  stage of the project.

Hazard and Operability Study-SHAH Gas Expansion & CO2 recovery project

 ADNOC Sour Gas operates the Shah Gas Plant, the world’s largest ultra-sour gas operation, with the capacity to produce 1.28 billion standard cubic feet of gas per day and 4.2 million tons of sulphur per year.  The Shah Gas expansion project includes upgrading  of the existing Natural gas fields to include new fields, producing natural gas and condensate at High Pressure and H2S content. The HAZOP study is vital for hazard identification and risk mitigation at an early (FEED) stage of the project.

LOPA/SIL study followed by the Hazop study, identifies the protection layers to mitigate the risk of any hazardous event to an acceptable level with the implementation of safety instrumented functions (SIFs)

Hazard and Operability Study

 The unit includes high toxicity chemicals such as Toluene, Nitric acid and Sulphuric acid which are operating at high temperature and pressure. Loss-of-Containment scenarios are  could result in serious injury to the operators as well as significant asset loss. The Hazop study is critical to ensure safe operations and a sustainable business model.

SIL Study with LOPA Methodology

Several high severity scenarios have been identified in the Hazop study which require further analysis with LOPA technique to ensure adequate safeguards are available. A number of Safety Instrumented Functions have been implemented and their SIL rating has been assessed.

SIL Study for Indian Oil

Indian Oil-Digboi Refinery

Crude oil was discovered here in late 19th century and first oil well was dug in 1866. Digboi is known as the Oil City of Assam where the first oil well in Asia was drilled. The first refinery was started here as early as 1901. Digboi has the oldest oil well in operation.  In 1867 Italian Engineers, commissioned by the Assam Railways and Trading Company, to build a railway line from Dibrugarh to Margherita accidentally discovered oil at Digboi around 10 miles from Margherita. ‘Dig boy, dig’, shouted the English engineer, Mr W L Lake, elephants emerging out of the dense forest with oil stains on their feet". This is possibly the most distilled – though fanciful – version of the legend explaining the siting and naming of Digboi.
